Things to do in Artarmon
Artarmon's Hampden Road features terrific shops and excellent restaurants and cafes. The suburb's leafy streets are ideal for long walks, while parks and reserves in the area, including the serene Lane Cove National Park, offer pleasant walking trails, picnic areas and the chance to spot native wildlife. The busy shopping precincts of Chatswood are moments away and offer endless retail therapy options for serious shopaholics. The popular dining and cafe strips of St Leonards and Crows Nest are also just down the road. Artarmon's location also means that Sydney's CBD, Olympic Park, Taronga Zoo and the Northern Beaches are within easy reach.
History of Artarmon
Artarmon was originally inhabited by the Cammeraygal group of the Kuringgai Aboriginal people. European settlement began in 1794 when land grants were made throughout the suburb. William Gore, who lent his name to nearby Gore Hill, was granted a significant stretch of land near Artarmon railway station and was quick to establish a large farm which he named Artarmon. Residential development of the suburb was slow to gain pace until soldiers returning from World War II were given parcels of land to construct houses. The resulting building boom greatly increased the desirability of the suburb. Today, Artarmon remains a desirable address on Sydney's North Shore.

Artarmon is best known for its quiet and leafy residential streets that are characteristic of Sydney's North Shore. Hampden Road is a busy shopping and dining area, while industrial and commercial areas between Artarmon and Gore Hill see large numbers of workers on weekdays. The large retail and corporate precincts at Chatswood attract workers and shoppers.

Artarmon has a busy shopping precinct with most businesses located along Hampden Road, opposite the railway station. The major shopping hub of Chatswood is a short distance away and offers the large malls of Chatswood Chase and Westfield Chatswood, which contain department stores, fashion boutiques, supermarkets and specialty stores.
