History of Bellingen

First settled in 1863 by timber getters impressed by the fine cedar, rosewood and mahogany forests. Dairy farmers followed as the land was cleared and a thriving business centre grew up. In the 1970s alternative life-stylers set up communes on out of town acreages, some of which are still going today. Creative people found inspiration in the beauty of the area and today tourism drives the areas economy which thrives on Bellingen is renowned for its festivals, music and visual and performing arts.

The historic village of Bellingen lies in a fertile river valley surrounded by hills and mountains. Renowned for its art, craft and vibrant music and dining scene, Bellingen is ideally situated to explore the regions white sand beaches, crystal clear waterholes and World Heritage rainforest. Some famous landmarks located near Bellingen include the Dorrigo National Park which is world heritage listed. Visit the rainforest centre and the famous Skywalk overlooking the escarpment over the Bellinger Valley and beyond. The Promised Land is a stunningly beautiful part of the valley. The Hammond and Wheatley building is Bellingens only department store and it was built in 1917 by architect George Moore. Today, it has been fully restored and was the first concrete block construction in the southern Hemisphere.

Bellingen is approx a 500km drive north from Sydney or 400kms south from Brisbane. 2hrs drive from Armidale in the west, 3hours south of Byron Bay, 2 hours north from Port Macquarie and half an hour south west of Coffs Harbour.
