Things to do in Byron Bay

Byron Bay on the NSW coast offers over 30km of beaches some with great surf, some that are secluded and others that are more family-friendly. Popular activities in the Byron Bay area include diving, snorkeling, kayaking tours or spotting dolphins. Visitors can also spot migrating whales from Captain Cook's Lookout and watch the sun rise at Cape Byron lighthouse. Catch a wave at The Pass or at Byrons Main Beach. Shop in Byron. Walk to Belongil or Wategos along the beach. Chill in one of dozens of cool cafes. Get healthy in the organic food shops. Dine at Raes or Dish. There is plenty to do in Byron. Then there is the lush hinterland to explore with Byrons rainforests, waterfalls, macadamia nut, banana and tea tree plantations.

History of Byron Bay

Captain Cook named Cape Byron after Admiral Byron in 1770 and though timber cutters sometimes camped there no European settlement occurred until 1885. At this point the timber industry was slowing though a dairy industry was established and was thriving by the early 1900s followed by meat production, sand mining and for a short time whaling, all of which have since given way to tourism.

Landmark in Byron Bay

Cape Byron's lighthouse is famous for being the most easterly point in Australia and Captain Cook's Lookout is a great place to spot migrating humpback whales. Julian Rocks Aquatic Reserve and Cape Byron Marine Park protect marine life in the Byron Bay area which helps to make it great diving and snorkeling.

Shopping in Byron Bay

Byron Bay has its share of art galleries, boutiques and surf shops as well as jewelry, glassware, furniture and hand crafted items. It is also the place for alternative medicine and services in line with its new age culture. Byron Bay market is held once a month. Jonson and Lawson streets are lined with surf clothing shops and eateries. But more daily shopping needs are met, by the local shops in the streets away from the shore. There is also a cinema and numerous professional services.

Restaurants & Cafes in Byron Bay

There over 100 cafes and restaurants ranging from arty to exotic. The Taste of Byron Food Festival is an annual event held around September that celebrates Byron Bay's gourmet offerings and at that time restaurants take to the streets accompanied by live music and entertainment. During the day, there are many relaxed beach cafes to choose around Byron. Many of these cafes turn into equally busy eateries at night. The local hotels and nightclubs offer a range of live music and late night entertainment.

Sports & Fitness in Byron Bay

The beach is the obvious focus of Byrons favourite sporting activities- swimming and surfing. Lap swimmers can try the local swimming pool. There is also a Golf Club and Tennis club. The town hosts various sporting events and the beach is the finish line of the annual Winter Wales swim. To balance all that swimming, surfing and diving, Byron Bay also has its share of health and well-being spas.

Transport in Byron Bay

Frequent buses run from the CBD. The beach area is easily accessed Lawson and Jonson streets and is well serviced by local taxi companies.

Transportation in Byron Bay

Byron Bay is around 800km (11 hours drive) from Sydney and 180km from Brisbane. It is possible to catch a flight to Coolangatta or Ballina airport and then go by bus to Byron Bay.
