Things to do in Nambucca Heads
Where the Nambucca River meets the Pacific Ocean, Nambucca Heads is a popular spot for surfing, swimming and fishing. The breakwater right in the centre of town is a fantastic spot for swimming, kayaking, boating and relaxing by. The town and surrounding areas have beaches to please everyone, with Shelly and Main being the most popular. There are many scenic lookouts in and around the town, including the Rotary Lookout and Captain Cook lookout which are great spots from which to watch whales migrating south.
The area is a fisherman's paradise, whether it is offshore, on the Nambucca River or at the mouth of the river. Warrel Creek is another popular fishing spot.
The Vee Wall Breakwall at the river mouth is also worth a look. It is a large open air art gallery where visitors are invited to leave messages on the rock faces.
The nearby towns of Scotts Head and Valla Beach are also worth exploring. Quiet and secluded, these sleepy, seaside villages have miles of beach that you can enjoy without encountering anyone else.
History of Nambucca Heads
John Oxley surveyed the area around Nambucca Heads in 1820. Timber gathering began in the area around 1840 and the population grew as loggers settled in the area to harvest red cedar trees. Fishing also began as a major industry in the town at the same time and the town was officially proclaimed in 1885. Farmers began working the rich agricultural land in the Nambucca Valley in the late 1800's. These three industries remain important in the town today, however tourism has grown to become one of the most important industries.

The estuary of the Nambucca River is the most famous landmark of the area. Creating a tranquil, wide, crystal bay which the town overlooks, the river mouth is an ideal spot to wander along and enjoy the extensive networks of boardwalks and parks.

Nambucca Heads Shopping Centre is located in the heart of town and has a wide selection of retail stores. There is also a Woolworths supermarket and a number of general stores for provisions.

There are airports at Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie with daily short flights to Sydney.
