Things to do in Nelson Bay
The largest in a chain of resort towns offering many forms of accommodation on the harbour of Port Stephens, Nelson Bay offers calm, white sandy beaches in which to swim and dive and wonderful national parks to explore. Watch all this from beachfront apartments and holidays houses. It is a great place from which to take a cruise to spot dolphins or migrating humpback whales, a ferry to nearby to Hawkes Nest or Tea gardens or a day trip to the vineyards of the Hunter Valley.
History of Nelson Bay
No one knows where the town's name originated but in the 1800s Chinese fishermen made it their home and caught, salted and sold their catch in Sydney, Melbourne and China. Fishing is still important to the town's economy alongside tourism which followed the arrival of developers in the late 1960s.
Landmark in Nelson Bay
Nelson Head is an elevated piece of land known separating Little Nelson Beach and Shoal Bay featuring the historical, though still operational, Inner Lighthouse. In town are Halifax Park which is attractively lit at night and the Marina which is close to restaurants, shops and holiday accommodation.
Tomaree National Park featuring scenic coastal bush land is nearby and Gan Gan car lookout with its breathtaking view is just a short drive away. A little further down the road is Salamander Bay, a great family outing with heaps of activities including a downhill toboggan track, mini-golf, radio-controlled boats, and canoe rides.

Houseboats, catamarans and speedboats as well as parasailing, jet skiing and waterskiing equipment can all be hired at Nelson Bay. Nelson Bay is also home to many annual maritime events including the Blessing of the Fleet in January, the Regional Boat Show in November and the weigh-ins of the Port Stephens Game fishing Competition in February. In addition to water sports there are cycle tracks and you can take a 4WD tours, go horse riding or sand boarding. Nelson Bay has a sports complex, rugby club and tennis club. There is a daily bus to Newcastle and local buses service the bay. A ferry service runs three times a week from Nelson Bay to Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest.
