Once an industrial city, Newcastle, Australia's sixth largest city, has a rich heritage of Victorian buildings, decorative houses as well as a vibrant nightlife. Newcastle also has plenty of interesting walks and great beaches. It is also close to the wineries of the Hunter Valley and the many coastal attractions of the central coast.

History of Newcastle

Newcastle was discovered by accident when Lt John Shortland in 1797 when searching for escaped convicts. Within two years coal was being mined from the area and in the early 1800s a timber industry was also established. A penal settlement was located there in 1804s and was named Newcastle after the UK coal port. This settlement was later relocated to Port Macquarie. Newcastle was at one time a significant force in NSWs steel industry after the BHP steelworks opened in 1915 but were phased out in 2000. Newcastle saw hard times following an earthquake in 1989 which was compounded by the economic recession of the early 1990s.
