Things to do in North Coast

Bask in the laidback atmosphere and year-round sunshine of the NSW North Coast which runs between Port Stephens and Coffs Harbour. Surf, swim or kayak in the calm waters of The Great Lakes, horse-ride through one of its many rainforests or meander through historic villages like Belligen. For some excitement, you can ride the white waters of one its five rivers or dive with the sharks in Forster. Whale watching cruises are on offer in Port Macquarie between June and November and you can swim with the dolphins at Port Stephens.

History of North Coast

Prior to settlement the area was well populated with indigenous people. The region was first explored by John Oxley around 1818 and settlers soon followed along with a penal colony which was relocated from Newcastle to Port Macquarie in 1823. Timber was the first major industry followed by farming in the late 1830s including grazing and sugarcane. For a while from the late 1880s, dairy farming was common and then various types of mining with tourism taking hold from the 1960s.

Landmark in North Coast

Some of the region's best-known beaches are found at Crescent Head, Forster, Harrington, Laurieton, Nambucca Heads, Old Bar, Shoal Bay and South West Rocks. Wallis, Smith and Myall lakes make up an impressive yet unspoiled water system near Foster. Don't miss the Big Banana at Coffs Harbour or the world heritage area of Dorrigo National Park. Timbertown in Wauchope is a of a 19th century pioneer timber village. Bellingen is the place to be in August when it hosts the annual Jazz Festival. Prominent diving spot Fish Rock Cave is near South West Rocks. Stockton Beach is the largest coastal sand dune system in Australia.

Shopping in North Coast

The best shopping spots in the region include Coffs Harbour' with its City Centre Mall & the Palms Centre, Coffs Promenade, Northside Shopping Centre, Jetty Village Shopping Centre, Toormina Gardens and Park Beach Plaza & Home Base. For arts and crafts, Gladstone on the way to South West Rocks is the place. Bellingens historic main street is lined with galleries and many towns have local fish co-ops for good value and fresh seafood. The Great Lakes Great Produce Farmers Market held on the third Saturday of the in Forster and the last Saturday of every month at Nabiac offers local and regional produce. Hastings Farmers Markets are in the Wauchope Showground on the fourth Saturday of each month.

Restaurants & Cafes in North Coast

The North Coast is the place for fresh seafood - whether its a seafood platter or fish and chips on the beach - as well as fresh farm produce and local wine. The larger centres of Forster, Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour (especially around the wharf) have a great range of restaurants and cafes. Villages like historic Bellingen and seaside Sawtell also have their share of restaurants and cafes. If its Indian you are after, Woolgoolga, with its large Indian community is the place or for a great barbeque spot, head to the grounds of the at the Taylors Arms, the historic bush pub made famous by the Slim Dusty song
