History of Port Macquarie
Port Macquarie, named after the Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie, was first visited in 1820 by John Oxley and was initially founded as a penal settlement, relocated from Newcastle. Ten years later a decision was taken to phase out the penal settlement and open it to free settlers who established cattle, timber, vineyards and dairy industries and later a port. Port Macquarie was still a quiet fishing town in the 1960s until roads improved and now it is a vibrant, commercialised resort.

Port Macquarie is also the home of the famous Koala Hospital at Macquarie Nature Reserve run by the Koala Preservation Society. Port Macquarie's Historical Museum is inside a convict-built store and contains numerous historical documents and artifacts Port Macquarie's beaches include Town Beach, Oxley, Rocky, Flynn's, Shelly, Miners and Lighthouse beaches. The Sea Acres Rainforest Centre at Shelley Beach has 72 hectares of coastal rainforest.
