Things to do in Salamander Bay

There are an endless number of white sandy beaches in the Salamander Bay area. Salamander Bay Beach is a long arcing stretch of sand fronting the azure waters of Port Stephens. Fingal Bay, Shoal Bay and Duchies Beach are also beautiful, protected beaches along the edge of Port Stephens. Along the oceanfront, try Anna Bay and Stockton Beach for surfing, swimming and fishing. Tomaree National Park lies to the east of Salamander Bay and preserves unspoilt coastal landscapes. There are many challenging bushwalks and beaches to explore including Zenith and Box Beaches all of which are easily accessible from Shoal Bay. Kids and kids at heart will love the Toboggan Run complex in Salamander Bay. The centre houses a downhill toboggan run, video games, mini-golf, canoe rides and indoor rock climbing.

History of Salamander Bay

Captain Cook was the first European to notice Port Stephens as he sailed along the east coast of Australia in 1770. In 1791 a settler sailed into Port Stephens and the area was soon being mined for coal. In the 1920s, the area around Port Stephens and Salamander Bay was considered a suitable site for a new state capital for a new state in the north of New South Wales. The area around Port Stephens was also considered for a military base. These plans never came to fruition and the area is still largely untouched except for the small smattering of coastal communities along the shores of Port Stephens including Shoal Bay, Nelson Bay, Lemon Tree Passage and Soldiers Point. Since the 1950s the area has been enticing sea changers and holiday makers.

Salamander Bay is an idyllic holiday village along the shores of Port Stephens. Larger than Sydney Harbour, Port Stephens is a magnificent, shallow and safe waterway. Surrounded by two volcanic remnants at the point where it meets the sea, the area has long been associated with summer holidays.

Shopping in Salamander Bay

Salamander Bay Shopping Centre located in the heart of the village contains a Woolworths and a BiLo supermarket as well as seventy speciality shops. Further provisions can be obtained in Nelson Bay which has a large shopping centre with a supermarket and speciality shops. Nearby Raymond Terrace also has shopping malls and a busy central business district.

Restaurants & Cafes in Salamander Bay

Salamander Bay has a good selection of cafes and takeaway food outlets for a town of its size. There are also two award winning restaurants located in the Soldiers Point Marina Complex in the adjoining town of Soldiers Point. Nelson Bay offers further options still, with some great restaurants and cafes.

Sports & Fitness in Salamander Bay

Salamander Bay is well equipped for leisure and sporting facilities. Port Stephens is perfect for fishing, boating, swimming, diving and water skiing. Surfing beaches are a short distance away at Nelson Bay and Anna Bay. Golfer's head to Pacific Dunes Golf Club where there are also tennis courts available to the public.

Transport in Salamander Bay

Salamander Bay is a two and a half hour drive from Sydney along the F3 Freeway and Pacific Highway. The town is forty minute drive north of Newcastle. Newcastle Airport at Williamtown is a thirty five minute drive away, where there are direct flights to Sydney and other capital cities. Trains stop in Broadmeadow and Newcastle and bus services connect to Salamander Bay.

Salamander Bay is 202 kilometres north of Sydney and 55 kilometres from Newcastle. Nelson Bay is a mere 7 kilometres or 10 minutes drive away.
