History of Smiths Lake
The Worimi people occupied the land that is now Pacific Palms The other group was the Yeerungal who were around Myall Lakes and the Wallamba group were in the Wallis Lake area all before white man came.
The people moved around from season to season hunting wildlife in winter and in the summer to fish and harvest shellfish. It was in the 19th century white man came to the area and the local aborigines were soon decimated by disease wars and loss of land.
The modern history of the area began with an original grant of a million acres to an Australian Agricultural Company for the development of the wool industry and breeding livestock and growing crops. However it became apparent that the coastal strip was unsuitable for sheep and in 1832 the company exchanged it for land elsewhere in NSW.
The coastal strip reverted to Crown Land and made way for the first Cedar getters with the view to take out the prized red cedar wherever they found it. They were soon followed by the early settlers who came to stake their claim for land in 1861.
The area was still fairly inaccessible as the Lakes Way was not sealed until 1970. The frothy coffee boat shed was built to service the seaplanes that flew potential investors up from Sydney, as they say, the rest is history!
