History of The Entrance
Shipwrecked fishermen were the first to land on this part of the coast in 1796 and local Aborigines fed them and helped them find their way home. The first European settlers and Chinese fishermen arrived in the late 1820s and a timber industry also developed. The first guesthouse opened in the late 1800s thanks to the completion of the railway line from Sydney to Newcastle and tourism in the area received another boost in the 1960s when the freeway between Sydney and Newcastle was built. The Entrance got its name in 1911 from the narrow channel connecting Tuggerah Lake to the ocean. The town is now best known for its daily Pelican feeding, which began in the 1980s by staff at a local fish & chip shop and which became a regular event sponsored by local businesses.
