Things to do in Yamba
Flanked by the Pacific Ocean, Clarence River and Yuraygir National Park, Yamba is a magnet for swimmers, surfers, fishers and boaters. The eleven beaches of the area cater to every taste, from the family-friendly Main Beach and its glorious rock pool, to the surfing havens of Turners Beach and Angourie. The more remote beaches of Flat Rock, Shelley Beach and Spooky Beach, offer great bush walking.
Yuraygir National Park to the south and Bundjalung National park to the north, provide the perfect opportunity to explore untouched coastal wilderness areas. Hugging the coastline, these breath taking National Parks contain pristine rainforests and secluded beaches.
The sleepy village of Iluka sits across the Clarence River and offers gorgeous beaches and fantastic fishing.
History of Yamba
Explorer Matthew Flinders was the first settler to visit Yamba in 1799. Yamba was officially proclaimed in 1885 as it grew on the fortunes of the fishing industry and the sugar cane crops that thrived on the fertile soil to the west of the town. Yamba soon became a bustling port with the constant traffic of steamboats passing on their journey between Sydney and Grafton.
After rail and road connections were improved, tourism became the dominant industry of the town.
Landmark in Yamba
The Clarence River lighthouse perched on Pilot Hill provides the iconic, postcard image of Yamba. The Pacific Hotel, high atop Main beach is a famous Yamba landmark.
Yamba is also the point at which the Clarence River, the east coast's largest river, meets the Pacific Ocean. A ferry service runs daily to Iluka across the river mouth.
Shopping in Yamba
Yamba's CBD, surrounded by Yamba and Coldstream Streets, is a busy shopping precinct with cafes, take away food shops, convenience shops and speciality retail stores. Yamba Shopping Fair, in the Treelands Drive Commercial Centre has a supermarket and all the major chain stores. Yamba has a number of delightful home wares and arts and crafts shops. There are also some terrific day spas in the area. Markets are held monthly at Yamba Oval.

From fine-dining to takeaway fish and chips, Yamba features a multitude of eating options. Fresh, local seafood such as fish, oysters and prawns feature heavily on the town's menus. There a number of good quality cafes in and around the centre of town. Yamba's pubs and clubs are also popular among locals seeking traditional fare.
Sports & Fitness in Yamba
Surfing and swimming are Yamba's favourite fitness activities. Visitors can also try water-skiing, jet-skiing and kayaking along the Clarence River. After drying off, locals and holiday makers alike can try their luck at the Yamba Golf and Country Club or the Yamba Bowling and Recreation club.
Bushwalking is a popular past time and nearby Bundjalung and Yuraygir National Parks have some excellent hiking, ranging from easy walks to full-day treks.
Transport in Yamba
Yamba is around seven hours drive from Sydney and three hours from Brisbane. There are airports at Grafton, Lismore and Ballina with direct flights to Sydney. Coaches from Brisbane and Sydney travel along the Pacific Highway and stop in Maclean and Grafton. Daily train services stop in Grafton from Brisbane and Sydney.
Transportation in Yamba
Yamba is 670 kilometres north of Sydney and 287 kilometres south of Brisbane. Grafton is the commercial and administrative centre of the region and is 60 kilometres and 45 minutes away. Frequent daily bus services run between the two towns.
