Things to do in Atherton
There are a number of primary schools located in the Atherton Tablelands. Secondary schools are located in Mareeba and Atherton. There are hospitals in Mareeba, Atherton and Herberton.
The lakes of the Atherton Tablelands including Barrine, Eacham and Tinaroo draw a number of visitors and are great spots for swimming, boating, fishing or just lazing beside. The waterfalls and swimming holes of the region, especially the Mungalli, Elinjaa, Millaa Millaa and Zillie Falls, are known for their refreshing cascades and crystal clear swimming pools. The region is also home to an abundance of natural wildlife including the elusive platypus, which can sometimes be spotted at Peterson Creek near Yunguburra.
The main towns of the region including Mareeba, Kuranda, Atherton, Herberton and Ravenshoe are all wonderful places to stop in and visit and many contain quirky shops and great cafes and bars.
History of Atherton
The Atherton Tablelands were first explored by the European JV Mulligan. John Atherton was the first to settle in the region and established the town of Atherton following the discovery of tin and the construction of the Great Northern Tin Mine. The miners were followed by timer cutters who harvested the great forests of the Atherton Tablelands. Today, the region is heavily invested in agriculture, with sugar cane, mangos and macadamias being the main crops of the region. The area is also known for its many dairy farms and its increasing popularity as a tourist destination.
Landmark in Atherton
Beginning at Millaa Millaa, The Waterfall Circuit drive of the Atherton Tablelands is a must for visitors. Along the fifteen kilometre circuit of the drive, the four spectacular waterfalls of Mungalli, Elinjaa, Millaa Millaa and Zillie Falls are all easily accessible and offer remarkable freshwater swimming holes, boardwalks and beautiful spots for picnics. The four waterfalls are also home to an abundance of amazing wildlife including turtles, fish and birds.
Lake Barrine, Eacham and others are all extinct volcanos, Lake Tinaroo provides channel irrigation to the agricultural region as well as a popular lake for water sports and fishing.
Other icons include Kuranda Scenic railway, Kuranda Skyrail Cablecar and the Barron Falls at Kuranda.

The major towns of the Atherton Tablelands all have busy shopping precincts serving visitors, locals and residents of the surrounding areas. Visitors will find shops selling arts and crafts, pottery, woodcrafts, antiques and souvenirs. The area is also well known for its wonderful fresh and local produce which can be obtained from markets and farm gates throughout the region.

The Atherton Tablelands are a paradise for wonderful outdoor activities. Canoeing, bushwalking, swimming and sailing are all popular in the region. Lake Tinaroo is a great spot for sailing, swimming and canoeing and a bushwalking track circumnavigates the dam providing spectacular views. Other good bushwalks can be found at Lake Barrine, Lake Eacham and Kauri Creek.
Transport in Atherton
The Atherton Tablelands is easily accessible from Cairns via the Gillies Highway or the Kennedy Highway. The Palmerston Highway connects the southern section of the region with Innisfail. Cairns is the major transport hub of the region offering air, rail and coach services to Brisbane and other capital cities.
