Things to do in Bribie Island
Beaches on the western side of the island are calm enough for families while there is often a small surf on the other side at Woorim Beach. Get a permit and tour around Bribie Island National Park in a 4WD. Bird watching, bike riding and bush walking are also popular activities in the area. Hop on a boat or kayak and explore Pumicestone Passage ? home to turtles, dolphins and dugongs. Have a relaxing family picnic at Lighthouse Reach or Lions Park. For a rainy day, there is a modest twin cinema on McMahon St which is very popular with locals and visitors.
History of Bribie Island
The island was used by the Australian army and navy during World War II to protect the gateway to Brisbane, and this led to the establishment of Fort Bribie. Bunkers and gun emplacements can still be found along the waterfront.
Landmark in Bribie Island
Pumicestone Passage is the passage of water which separates Bribie Island from the mainland. The passage earned its name because Captain James Cook noticed many floating pumice stones when he first explored the area. Bribie Island National Park covers much of the island and is a beautiful and unique natural landmark. 250-350 Bird species live in or visit the area.

Bribie Island?s central shopping area is situated in Bellara, which has Woolworths, Target and other larger chains. There are also supermarket facilities in Bongaree and Banksia. There are two large modern hotels which offer dining facilities, but many locals and travellers prefer the famed Bribie Island Citizens and RSL Club. The area also has a local Chinese restaurant and family friendly bistros on the beach. On Bribie Island there is no shortage of pizzerias or seafood restaurants ? each of which are scattered around the main suburbs.
Sports & Fitness in Bribie Island
There is an established golf club located in Woorim. A second golf course and club was recently completed in Banksia Beach. There are two bowls clubs in Bongaree and one at Banksia Beach. There is also a Surf Lifesaving Club at Woorim (on the ?surf side?).
Watersports equipment is available for hire on the island. There are more extensive fitness facilities (including gyms and day spas), situated in nearby mainland towns such as Caboolture, Caloundra and Maroochydore.

Bribie Island is accessible by car via the Bruce Highway ? around 1-1.5 hours from Brisbane City. The train to Caboolture Station connects with trainlink services to Bribie Island.
Bribie Island Coach services offer transport around the island and to Caboolture and Morayfield. This service connects with train services from Brisbane.
Maroochydore and Brisbane City are the closest and easiest places to fly into.
