History of Bundaberg & Gladstone
The first known indigenous tribes to inhabit the Burnett/Bundaberg region were the Taribelang and Goreng Goreng people. The city was named in 1870. Bundaberg is said to be a fusion of the Aboriginal word ?bunda? (meaning important man) and the German suffix ?berg? (meaning town). European settlers founded the town in 1867 ? and timber became its first established industry. Soon after sugar cane also became a successful local resource ? and this remains an important industry for the town.
