Things to do in Maroochydore
This oceanside suburb on the Maroochy River offers both calm riverside swimming and river cruises as well as surfing boating, fishing and jet skiing. There are also thousands of hectares of reserves and parklands in the area for exploring.
It also has plenty of holiday flats and a caravan park and with its central location makes a great base for exploring the Sunshine Coast's attractions.
History of Maroochydore
Maroochydore is said to be the indigenous name for 'black swan', and the area was, from the early 1850s, a source of timber though the town itself did not come into being until 1900 and it was a further 60 years before it became a major tourist destination.
Landmark in Maroochydore
Maroochy River's southern bank is made-up of parkland and picnic spots. Alexandra Headland Beach, part of the main Maroochydore beach front, has great surf. The Sunshine Castle at Bli Bli is a recreated Norman-style castle complete with dungeons, a drawbridge and moat, suits of armour and a torture chamber. The Endeavour at the Maroochy River Resort is a slightly smaller replica of Cook's boat. Underwater World has a moving walkway beneath a massive aquarium filled with sea creatures. Mount Coolum National Park is north of Maroochydore and has a thirty minute walk to the top of Mt Coolum providing stunning views over the area
Shopping in Maroochydore
Maroochydore, the a main commercial area of the Sunshine Coast, has the Sunshine Plaza, a shopping centre with more than 250 specialty shops and department stores and is handy to most holiday accommodation. The Big Top Shopping Centre and Kawana Shopping World are also within ten minutes drive. Maroochydore also has markets on Sunday morning.
