Life in Oak Beach revolves around the water. Whether it is swimming, snorkelling or simply lazing on the sand, Oak Beach is a secluded and calm stretch of water ideal for relaxation.
The scenic Captain Cook Highway which links Oak Beach to Port Douglas and Cairns, is one of the most beautiful coastal roads in Australia. Winding along cliffs and passing quiet beaches and bays including Thala Beach, Wangetti Beach and Ellis Beach, this stretch of coast offers great lookouts, walking trails and an endless number of spots for a swim.
Oak Beach is just ten minutes from the heart of the resort town of Port Douglas which offers fantastic shopping and dining and Oak Beach is also within easy reach of the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest.
History of Oak Beach
Oak Beach and the surrounding area was first settled by Europeans who cultivated the land for agriculture. Fruits, vegetables and sugar cane became the primary crops and many of these are still grown today in the district. Mining was also an important industry in the development of this stretch of North Queensland.
Today, tourism is the dominant industry in the region. Oak Beach and Port Douglas are a magnet for visitors and the town and region are heavily promoted holiday destinations.
Landmark in Oak Beach
The golden sands of Oak Beach are the town's most famous landmark. Sitting between the small sliver of low rise development and the Coral Sea, Oak beach is a gorgeous, two kilometre stretch of secluded beach where the rainforest meets the crystal clear water.
Oak Beach is one of many beautiful beaches in the region. Further south along the Captain Cook Highway, Thala Beach, Wangetti Beach, Ellis Beach and Palm Cove are all tropical paradises where it easy to find a spot all to yourself.
Oak Beach is also an ideal base from which to explore the magnificent Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest and the Cape Tribulation National Park.

Port Douglas is home to a large shopping precinct centred around Wharf and Macrossan Streets. There are supermarkets, delis and speciality stores. The area is also gaining a reputation for high end shopping with a number of boutiques, art galleries and craft shops operating in the town.
