Things to do in Port Douglas
This resort town an hour from Cairns offers the usual resort fare: beautiful beaches, great dining, superb shopping, luxury accommodation but Port Douglas is also the closest town to the Great Barrier Reef and on its doorstep is the Daintree rainforest and the Cape Tribulation national parks. With outdoor adventure the focus, visitors can take a snorkeling or diving tour or view stunning coral reefs in glass bottomed boats and submersibles.
And there are many ways to explore the rainforest including on horseback or by 4WD.
History of Port Douglas
Mining followed by agriculture used to be the main economic mainstay of Port Douglas which only relatively recently embraced tourism. It still produces sugar cane, fruit and cattle but since the seventies, tourism has been its major industry.
Landmark in Port Douglas
The Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree rainforest and Cape Tribulation national parks are the areas most prominent landmarks. Four Mile Beach is also well known as the place to swim in Port Douglas and other local attractions include The Lookout on Flagstaff Hill, The Marina, Ben Cropp Shipwreck Museum and St Marys Church.

Macrossan and Wharf Streets offer a variety of boutiques and specialty shops as does the Marina Mirage shopping centre. There are also local markets in Anzac Park and the week long Port Douglas Carnivale at the end of May includes many arts and craft stalls.

Macrossan Street, a popular spot for holiday accommodation, is also dotted with restaurants and outdoor cafes and bars with the specialty being its local seafood and other produce.
