History of Sunshine Coast

Since the Glasshouse Mountains were first sighted by James Cook from the deck of HMS Endeavour in 1770, the Sunshine Coast's history has been as diverse and colourful as its scenery. With the coming of the railway to Gympie, the coastal towns, founded as ports for its early river trade, were bypassed, and grew slowly into quiet holiday resorts whose peace remained undisturbed until the development boom of the 1960s and 1970s.

The Sunshine Coasts beaches are regarded as some of the finest in Australia, extending virtually uninterrupted 60km from Caloundra in the south to Noosa Heads in the north. Aside from its beaches, the hinterland and the Glasshouse Mountains are another highlight of the Sunshine Coast region.

Shopping in Sunshine Coast

Weekend markets are a regular and extremely popular fixture at many of the Sunshine Coast beaches and inland townships. Hastings Street in Noosa offers a range of stylish boutiques and specialty stores. Mooloolaba Esplanade is very fashionable shopping strip on the central Sunshine Coast ranging from surf shops to boutique and designer stores. Maroochydores Sunshine Plaza features over 210 specialty stores as well as the Birch Carroll & Coyle cinema complex. Other major shopping centres and malls can be found in Caloundra, Noosa, Currimundi, Nambour and Gympie.
