Things to do in Tropical North Qld

Cairns is the heart of Tropical North Queensland and is the main gateway to Northern Australia. With its fabulous backdrops of rainforest mountain ranges and the Coral Sea, Cairns is a modern city and is the perfect base to explore the wider Tropical North Queensland region with access to the World Heritage listed reef and rainforest. Be sure to visit the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary which is the largest in Australia and listed in the Guinness Book of Records. Atherton is the capital of the Tropical Tablelands, and is a land of beautiful lakes and waterfalls. Mission Beach is a relaxed, yet vibrant beachfront town with over 14 kilometres of magnificent golden sandy beaches. At only 70km north of Cairns, picturesque Port Douglas is an internationally renowned holiday hot spot with its stunning beaches such as Four Mile Beach. It is also the ideal location from which to explore the northern areas of the reef and rainforest coast of Daintree and Cape. Or just relax by the pool at your luxury holiday home.

History of Tropical North Qld

North of Cairns you will enter a world steeped in ancient Aboriginal culture with spirits and legends recorded in rock art. Historical Cooktown is the gateway to the wilderness and was founded in 1873 as the port for the Palmer River Goldfields. This was more than a century after Captain James Cook spent 48 days in 1770 on the banks of the Endeavour River repairing his ship.

Tropical North Queensland is a vast region which covers an area of more than half a million hectares beginning in the south from Mission Beach, north to Cape York Peninsula and west across the Tropical Tablelands and Gulf Savannah to the Northern Territory border. The region is made up of reefs and islands, through to beach and coastal wetlands to mountains, tablelands and Gulf Savannah grassland. The major centre is Cairns, a tropical town with fantastic markets and shopping malls.

There is something for everyone at Cairns Central Shopping Centre. With over 180 retail outlets, this is the largest shopping precinct in the Tropical North. The Pier Marketplace in Cairns offers a variety of specialty shops and markets.

Almost two kilometres of landscaped parkland fringes a busy thoroughfare and restaurant strip on one side, and a natural harbour on the other.
