Things to do in Urangan
Whale watching in Hervey Bay remains an enduring attraction, with the Humbpack Whales that visit the Hervey Bay Marine Park delighting locals and visitors alike. Around twenty operators offer whale watching cruises on the bay. The waters of Hervey Bay are also ideal for swimming, diving, kayaking and canoeing, with Urangan Beach and Hervey Bay Beach being two of the most popular spots. The foreshore trail connecting Urangan with Point Vernon is a wide tree-lined strip great for walks and bike rides. Elsewhere in Urangan and Hervey Bay, there are art galleries, botanical gardens and museums. Kids will love the Hervey Bay Go Kart Track and Neptune's Reefworld. Adults will love al fresco dining overlooking Hervey Bay and long walks on the beach.
History of Urangan
Captain James Cook was the first European to sight Urangan and Hervey Bay when he sailed along the Queensland coastline in 1770. Settlement of the district did not occur until the 1860s when cattle and dairy farmers moved into the area. Following the construction of the rail line from Maryborough and the Urangan Pier, the area grew rapidly and became a busy regional port. The localities of Hervey Bay, including Urangan, Pialba, Point Vernon and Torquay grew to form Hervey Bay, which was proclaimed a city in 1994.
Landmark in Urangan
Urangan's most famous landmark is the Urangan Pier which juts out into the crystal blue waters of Hervey Bay. Constructed in 1917, the jetty allowed Urangan to become an important port for the export of sugar cane to Brisbane. Today, the pier is not operational and is mainly used by visitors and anglers. The beaches of Urangan are also a major drawcard and offer long sweeping stretches of sand. The foreshore trail travels the 14 kilometres from the Urangan Pier to Point Vernon and is popular with cyclists, joggers and walkers. Urangan is also a major access point for Fraser Island, a World Heritage listed reserve considered the world's largest sand island.

A number of shopping centres can be found in the Urangan area including Urangan Central Shopping Centre, Hervey Bay Central Shopping Centre and Pialba Place. Expect to find all the modern conveniences including department stores, supermarkets and specialty retailers. The Hervey Bay markets held every Sunday are a great place to snare a bargain.

Urangan is a three and a half hour drive north of Brisbane via the Bruce Highway. Flights from Brisbane operate out of Hervey Bay Airport and high speed rail services from Brisbane stop in nearby Maryborough.
