Things to do in Adelaide
Hills, beaches, parks, and the Torrens River surround Adelaide, the well designed capital of South Australia. History of Adelaide
The city was founded in 1836 as the capital and was a freely settled province. It is named after Queen Adelaide, King William IV's consort and was designed by Colonel William Light in a grid with wide streets, public squares and surrounded by parkland. These days Adelaide produces minerals, and specialises in the car manufacturing and defence industries.

Mount Lofty Ranges are just a short drive from Adelaide's CBD and the River Torrens runs through the city and at its widest spot is called Torrens Lake. The Adelaide Festival Centre on the banks of The Torrens River is the site of the famous Adelaide Festival, which is held every even numbered year. The Gulf St Vincent, a string of white sandy beaches, the most famous being Glenelg, is just a few kilometers west of the city. Other attractions include the Botanic Gardens, Adelaide Zoo, Tandanya - National Aboriginal Cultural Institute, the National Wine Centre and the Bradman Collection.
