Things to do in Barossa Valley & Clare Valley

The most popular tourist activity in this region is visiting the various wineries ? which number over 50. Visit a selection on your own or join a guided tour to learn more about the area?s special industry. The Barossa Wine Train is a luxurious choice, or you can join a local coach tour by basing yourself in one of the central towns (Angaston, Bethany or Tanunda). If you get your fill of eating and drinking ? Barossa and Clare Valley have beautiful natural surroundings which you can explore. Take a scenic drive around Gawler or Mengler Hill. If the kids get sick of endless vineyard visits, take them to see the Lego man in Angaston ?they will get to see the largest private collection of Lego in Australia! There are plenty of art galleries, museums, breweries, golf courses and spas on offer. The Barossa Valley hosts fantastic local music festivals including the Barossa Jazz Festival and the Barossa Under the Stars Concert.

History of Barossa Valley & Clare Valley

The Barossa Valley was named in association with the Barossa Ranges. Colonel William Light named the ranges in 1837 in memory of the British victory in the Battle of Barrosa. A later misspelling by Lutheran settlers meant that the area came to be known as the Barossa Valley. The main settlers in the area were German immigrants, fleeing persecution in Prussia and Silesia. The new settlers were industrious and developed the area as one of Australia?s premier wine regions. The influence of the Germans in terms of culture and lifestyle can still be felt in the area today. The Barossa Valley blends its wine industry with its blossoming tourist market ? forming the ideal getaway for many Australian and international travellers.

Landmark in Barossa Valley & Clare Valley

The whispering wall is a distinctive landmark in the region. It is situated south of the Cockatoo Valley and enables a speaker on one end of the 140m curved wall to whisper a message to a friend on the other side. The Lyndoch Lavender Farm is also a must-see feature of the region. It spreads over 2.5 hectares and includes over 80 varieties of the flower.

Shopping in Barossa Valley & Clare Valley

The main retail attraction of the area is wine. Travel to as many vineyards as you can fit in your trip ? taste tests will ensure you find the perfect bottle (or two). Some of the most well known vineyards in the area include Barossa Valley Estate and Langmeil. There is a large shopping complex at Nuriootpa, which includes two major supermarkets. Main towns such as Tanunda, Angaston, Lyndoch and Bethany each have a generous proportion of retail outlets on the main street. Farmers markets are held every Saturday morning in Angaston. Each local town offers specialty art and craft products.

The German heritage of the area is evident in its specialty foods. Sourdough breads, smoked ham, dried fruit, glazed nuts, home-made mustards and fruit and wine vinegars are all on offer in Barossa Valley stores and restaurants. The dining highlight in the region is its local wine selection. Barossa Valley is famous for its Shiraz and Clare Valley specialises in Rieslings. Not only will you find Barossa and Clare Valley wines available at all licensed restaurants, the vineyards themselves make cosy and atmospheric settings for a wonderful night out. Every two years the region hosts the Barossa Vintage Festival ? which is a lively and vibrant celebration of the area?s wine, food, heritage and culture. With 50 magnificent wineries, and many more gourmet restaurants and food stores ? the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley will not disappoint in the wining and dining departments.

Sports & Fitness in Barossa Valley & Clare Valley

The Barossa Valley Golf Club is located near Nuriootpa, and there is another 18 hole course in Tanunda. Tanunda, Angaston and Nuriootpa each have cricket and bowling clubs. There is a recreation and fitness centre in Tanunda. The region hosts many high profile sporting events including the Barossa Golf Open, the Jacobs Creek Tour Down Under Cycling Race, the Brauer Half Marathon and the Classic Adelaide Rally car racing.

Transport in Barossa Valley & Clare Valley

Within the Barossa Valley there are many car rental facilities, and the area also offers a large selection of campervans for hire. In order to explore the area with ease, you may be interested in taking a guided tour on a minibus or 4WD. Bicycles are available for hire throughout the area. Barossa Valley and Clare Valley are both just over 50km north west of Adelaide. It would take between 1 -1.5 hours to drive by car. If you are not planning to take a car on your trip, there are coach services available from Adelaide to and from the towns in Barossa and Clare Valley. An airport shuttle also runs from Adelaide airport.
