Things to do in Christies Beach
Excellent beaches at Christies and Port Noarlunga are a great amenity for a variety of activities: relaxing strolls along beach, swimming, boating, snorkelling and diving on reef, fishing from beach or jetty and surfing if the surf is up.
Christies is at the northern end of a scenic tour route down along the stunning Fleurieu coastline as far as Cape Jervis with Kangaroo Is. across Backstairs Passage, and then east to Victor Harbour and Goolwa near the Murray mouth, then back through the Adelaide Hills.
Also 10mins drive from Christies will get you into the famous Mclaren Vale wine country with its 60-odd cellar doors and some of the best wine in the world plus some excellent cheeses. Other activities on offer are various nature and heritage walks, a public swimming pool, boat ramps, skating, a theatre complex, skateboarding, BMX riding, golf, tennis, various types of bowling, a library and good shopping.
History of Christies Beach
In earlier times Christies was covered with wheat farms and vineyards. The beach was a destination for a days picnic outing from Adelaide or location for holiday shacks. After WW2 it grew into an outer suburb. Noarlunga, about 1 km inland, became the centre of local government (City of Onkaparinga), a very large shopping complex (Colonnades), a hospital, a train and bus terminal and location for various entertainments (mentioned above). In time the beach shacks have been demolished and replaced with smart houses. The progressive Council has preserved the coastline and added attractive facilities. The railway service and expressway make it much less an outer suburb than it was.
Landmark in Christies Beach
The Onkaparinga River flows down from the Adelaide Hills into the Onkaparinga Gorge which ends at the little historic town of Old Noarlunga. Then it meanders to the coast as an estuary, entering the sea through cliffs and dunes just south of (also historical) Port Noarlunga. The Gorge, the estuary and dunes are nature reserves. There are several other reserves on the coast and inland such as Aldinga and Gemmel Tassie Reserve at McLaren Vale.
Shopping in Christies Beach
There are clusters of shops throughout the area. The main one is at Noarlunga Centre (Colonnades), but other large shopping centres are Beach Rd Christies, Seaford, Aldinga, Morphett Vale, Reynella and Mclaren Vale.

Real Estate & Design in Christies Beach
Although years ago Christies consisted of the odd farm house and an assortment of beach shacks it is now suburban residential with the accompanying commerce. The beach shacks have all but disappeared, either transformed into or replaced by more substantial and modern holiday homes and apartments in Christies Beach. This is particularly obvious along the esplanade where property has greatly increased in value. With the aid of State Gov. money, the Council has done a great deal over the years to conserve the coastline and create an attractive beachfront. Christies and Port Noarlunga have always been especially beautiful and fortunately this beauty and the sweeping pristine beach sands that attracted early picnickers have remained to this day. In spite of now being suburban these beaches dont normally seem to be cluttered with human beings. There is a wide range of accommodation in Christies Beach.
