History of Moonta Bay
The area around Moonta Bay was originally inhabited by the Narrungga Aboriginal people. Europeans settled in the region in the 1860s following the discovery of large deposits of copper. The copper mines attracted a large number of immigrants and led to the establishment of the towns of Moonta Bay, Moonta, Port Hughes and Wallaroo. Mining continued into the 1900s and mining on a much smaller scale continues today. The towns of Moonta and Moonta Bay are rich in history and the area's mining heritage and spectacular coastline proves a strong drawcard for visitors.
