Moonta Bay offers something for every visitor from stunning natural scenery to fascinating heritage.
The waters of the Spencer Gulf draw a large number of visitors to Moonta Bay and Port Hughes. The beaches stretch for miles and the waters are calm and safe for children. Other popular beach activities include diving, windsurfing, sailing and boating. Many charter boat operators lead fishing expeditions to the Spencer Gulf and the fishing is great from one of the many jetties in the area.
The rich mining heritage of the Moonta Bay area is best explored at the Moonta Mines Museum which houses artefacts used by the copper miners as well as excellent interactive displays for children. The Wheal Hughes Mine is also open to the public and allows the visitor to travel deep into a mine shaft.
A trip to Moonta and Moonta Bay is also not complete without visiting the many heritage buildings of the area, including the Moonta Railway Station which now operates as the town's visitor information centre.
History of Moonta Bay
The area around Moonta Bay was originally inhabited by the Narrungga Aboriginal people. Europeans settled in the region in the 1860s following the discovery of large deposits of copper. The copper mines attracted a large number of immigrants and led to the establishment of the towns of Moonta Bay, Moonta, Port Hughes and Wallaroo. Mining continued into the 1900s and mining on a much smaller scale continues today. The towns of Moonta and Moonta Bay are rich in history and the area's mining heritage and spectacular coastline proves a strong drawcard for visitors.

The Moonta Mines Museum shows what life was like on the copper fields and the other heritage buildings of the area including the Uniting Church, Wheal Hughes Mine and the Freemasons Hall all date back to the 1800s.
