Things to do in Hobart
Tasmania's beautiful capital city and Australia's second oldest city sits on banks of the Derwent River and visitors can stroll along its docks and try some Tasmanian home grown produce on the cove. Its parks and heritage buildings are also worth a visit and it is possible to climb nearby Mount Wellington or take a boat trip to the Cadbury factory.
History of Hobart
Hobart was originally settled to prevent the French from establishing a colony on the island and its first inhabitants included a number of convicts. The port used to be the backbone of the economy but these days light industry and tourism dominate. It is named after Robert Hobart, the secretary of state for war and the colonies when it was settled.

The docks area is a central hub of the city and Hobart's other famous landmarks include Mount Wellington which looms over the city in the West and Mount Nelson in the South. There is also Wrest Point Casino, Australia's first legal casino, the Cadbury Factory, the beautiful Botanical Gardens, historic Battery Point and Salamanca Place. There are a number of historic buildings to see in the CBD including the Tasmanian Museum, Art Gallery Town Hall and Hobart's oldest building, the Commissariat Store and the Bond Store.
