History of Strahan
Strahan was founded in 1883. In the 1850s Strahan began as a supply town for the explorers and timber-cutters who looked to the West Coast for the Huon Pine and a possible gold strike. Strahan was a major port for shipping out Huon pine and the ore from nearby Mt Lyell copper mine that was brought down to Strahan from Queenstown via the Abt Railway. Strahan was indeed a bustling little town for trade and fishing.
In the 1970s the port closed to larger ships, along with the railway line and most of the mills closed as the Huon pine was protected from logging.
Strahan was then put on the map again in 1984 when the Hawke Federal Government of the day prevented the building of the Gordon River dam for hydro power and the area was declared a national park in the World Heritage area.
Strahan today is a major tourist destination for people to discover this wonderful area.
When one takes a cruise on the famous dark tea coloured Gordon River one also visits Sarah Island, the penal settlement that was established for British felons transported here from 1822 -1833. Here the convicts on the island cut timber, the Huon pine and built ships.
