Things to do in Apollo Bay
The village of Apollo Bay on the scenic Great Ocean Road is best known for its great beaches, variety of accommodation and its fishing. Visitors can also take a boat cruise, play golf by the sea, explore nearby pristine rainforests and waterfalls, and even go hang-gliding or horse riding.
History of Apollo Bay
The Aborigines who lived in the area prior to European settlers lived on seafood and whaling was one the area's first industries in 1840 followed by timber in the 1850 and farming in the 1860s. The town was named after the schooner Apollo though it was called Kambruk between the 1870s and 1950s. In 1932 after being hit by freak waves when trying to berth at the jetty, a coastal steamer Casino sank killing ten onboard. Though Apollo Bay is now a tourist town with a wide source of rental properties, it is also a fishing port.

The Great Ocean Road is a 300km stretch of road running along Victoria's stunning southern coastline with a variety of accommodation to be found along the way. Mariners Lookout on the hills behind Apollo Bay also has great views and the pristine Otway Ranges National Park can be entered via Apollo Bay. Apollo Bay has 24 sea-inspired sculptures by nine artists and the anchor of the wrecked steamer, the Casino, is outside the Apollo Bay post office. It also has Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary complete with local seals and glowworm walking tours. Then there is the Old Cable Station Museum, which details the laying of telephone cable across Bass Strait to Tasmania in 1936 and Bass Strait Shell Museum with its collection of local and overseas shells. Local beauty spots including Barham Paradise Scenic Reserve, Marriners Falls, Barham River Valley, Grey River Scenic Reserve and Walk and Elliot River and Elliot River Walk. Apollo Bay also is the home of the annual Apollo Bay Music Festival.

In addition to Apollo Bay's local wares spanning food, clothing, gifts, arts and crafts and surf ware, the larger shopping centres of Geelong and Lorne are close by.
The local fishermen's cooperative sell lobster, crayfish, and local fish, oysters and prawns. There are markets on the foreshore of Apollo Bay every Saturday selling arts and crafts and fresh produce.
