Things to do in Barwon Heads

Barwon Heads is renowned for its relaxed coastal living and its picturesque river estuary. Spend time fishing the river, local surf beaches, rock pools or just relax on the jetties dangling a line. Boating, sailing and kayaking etc are also extremely popular and the local surf beaches host both surfers and windsurfers. Hang-gliding is also a popular pastime along the steep cliffs abutting the surf beach. The Marine Sanctuary around the Bluff is also a great place for swimming and snorkeling. Enjoy safe swimming along the river mouth or be more adventurous at the patrolled 13th beach surf club. Golf is a must at the prestigious Barwon Head's golf course with its rolling greens and water views. 5 minutes by car takes you to the new 13th Beach Golf Estate and its new million dollar links courses. Visit the Jirrahlinga koala and wildlife sanctuary as well as the Lake Connewarre State game Reserve. It is the gateway to the Great Ocean Road and is only a 20 minute drive to Torquay, Geelong, Portarlington and the Queenscliff Ferry Terminal. The entrance to Port Phillip bay known as the Rip is only a short drive away at Pt. Lonsdale and this is the only shipping access to Melbourne and Geelong

History of Barwon Heads

The area was first settled at the mouth of the Barwon river on the Ocean Grove side in 1854, but the Barwon Heads side wasnt populated until 1875. Between 1853 and 1890 12 ships were wrecked along it rugged coastline and the boiler of one of them can be seen sticking out of the water near the river mouth at low tide. The connecting wooden bridge between its sister town, Ocean Grove was completed in 1927 and has become a major tourist attraction as it is the longest wooden bridge of it type in Victoria, spanning over 400 meters. In the early 1880s until the mid 1920s a successful fishing fleet was based on the river. Barwon Heads has developed into one of the major holiday destinations on the Bellarine Peninsula. It was just another sleepy seaside holiday destination until it was used as the location for the hugely successful ABC TV series SeaChange and it is now a major tourist attraction.

Landmark in Barwon Heads

The Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary is located at the mouth of the Barwon River with the wrecks of two ships located on the outer edges of the nearby Charlemont reef. The reef was named after The Earl of Charlemont a ship that sunk just off the bluff in 1853. The rugged limestone cliffs of the Barwon Heads Bluff are a major tourist attraction with its coastal trail and lookouts with splendid views from the entrance to Port Phillip Bay to Torquay. The connecting wooden bridge between Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads was completed in 1927 and is the longest bridge of it type in Victoria, spanning over 400 meters.

There are several award winning restaurants, cafes, delis and bakeries in Barwon Heads. Barwon Orange is the place to go for a gourmet pizza and a few quiet drinks. The Starfish Bakery is well known for its bread, croissants and muffins and serves one of the best breakfasts in the local area. At The Heads is a jetty restaurant which overlooks the Barwon River and the entrance to Bass Strait. It boasts a great menu and is a popular spot on any Sunday with both its dine in and outdoor relaxed atmosphere. The local Wine Bar serves great coffee and comes alive at night. Vegetarians are also well catered for with their own restaurant and Gallery. Annie's Providore is known for its great selection of cheese and meats. The local fish shop also supplies some of the best fish & chips on the coast. There is also a licensed pizza shop to dine in or takeaway.

Regular bus services around town and to Geelong as well as nearby towns. Taxi service is available from Ocean Grove. The town itself is small enough to travel by foot to most destinations.
