Things to do in Barwon Heads
Barwon Heads is renowned for its relaxed coastal living and its picturesque river estuary. Spend time fishing the river, local surf beaches, rock pools or just relax on the jetties dangling a line.

History of Barwon Heads
The area was first settled at the mouth of the Barwon river on the Ocean Grove side in 1854, but the Barwon Heads side wasnt populated until 1875.
Between 1853 and 1890 12 ships were wrecked along it rugged coastline and the boiler of one of them can be seen sticking out of the water near the river mouth at low tide.
The connecting wooden bridge between its sister town, Ocean Grove was completed in 1927 and has become a major tourist attraction as it is the longest wooden bridge of it type in Victoria, spanning over 400 meters.
In the early 1880s until the mid 1920s a successful fishing fleet was based on the river.
Barwon Heads has developed into one of the major holiday destinations on the Bellarine Peninsula. It was just another sleepy seaside holiday destination until it was used as the location for the hugely successful ABC TV series SeaChange and it is now a major tourist attraction.
Landmark in Barwon Heads
The Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary is located at the mouth of the Barwon River with the wrecks of two ships located on the outer edges of the nearby Charlemont reef. The reef was named after The Earl of Charlemont a ship that sunk just off the bluff in 1853.
The rugged limestone cliffs of the Barwon Heads Bluff are a major tourist attraction with its coastal trail and lookouts with splendid views from the entrance to Port Phillip Bay to Torquay.
The connecting wooden bridge between Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads was completed in 1927 and is the longest bridge of it type in Victoria, spanning over 400 meters.
