Things to do in Belgrave
The region is a marvellous country area just one hours drive or train ride east of Melbourne characterised by tall timber, panoramic views and rolling hills. Belgraves main attraction is the Puffing Billy steam train.
It is the oldest operating steam train locomotive in Australia and passengers step instantly back in time when boarding. The train starts its journey in Belgrave and winds through the deep forests and fern gullies of the Dandenong Ranges through Puffing Billy country.
Lunch and dinner are available in the dining carriages. The old steam train can also be watched from the road or under a long wooden trestle bridge.
Belgrave village has a variety of first class restaurants to discover. In summer the Cameo Theatre opens its outdoor theatre. Enjoy a champagne or dinner while watching a movie.
Rubys Lounge in Belgrave showcases many live Melbourne bands.
Belgrave is also a good base for exploring the Dandenong Ranges National Park. Encompassing more than 3200 hectares of established bushland, you will be tantalised by the tall Mountain Ash eucalypt trees.

History of Belgrave
Belgraves history of settlement started around 1900
by city folk that ventured out for weekend holidays and day trips.
Most other parts of the Dandenongs were opened up for settlement during the 1890s Depression with 10 acre blocks for small scale farming.
The train station was built in 1900 as part of the Puffing Billy line from Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook.
Puffing Billy was often overloaded with passengers on the weekends as it took the influx of weekenders from the city to the foothills villages.
Guest houses, tea houses and week-ender huts soon sprung up Belgrave village soon followedalong with all the villages in the Dandenong Ranges.
