History of Bendigo
The history of European settlement in Bendigo began in 1851 at the start of Victoria's gold rush. The town quickly became inundated with people from all over the world who came to strike it lucky on the goldfields. Prospectors from Ireland, England, Germany and China descended on Bendigo in search of riches. Many of the settlers built stately houses and grand commercial buildings in the heart of Bendigo, many of which still stand today.

Bendigo is most famous for its gold rush heritage and remnants of this heritage lay around the city and surrounds in the form of disused mines, shafts and gold fields. Central Deborah Gold Mine is a former operational gold mine that has been converted into a tourist attraction. Pan for gold or travel deep underground into a mine shaft.
Bendigo is known as the city within a forest, due to the many surrounding parks and reserves clustered in and around the city.
The Greater Bendigo National Park, a large reserve which is an amalgamation of former state forests offers diverse vegetation and a host of activities, ranging from bushwalking to cycling to bird watching. The White Hills Botanical Gardens is also a popular spot for a tranquil stroll.
