Things to do in Bright

Hit the walking trails in this tree-lined mountain resort town in Autumn and witness the display of the colors from centuries old elms, chestnuts, poplars and scarlet oaks - but be sure to book early as holiday houses and apartments in Bright are in demand at this time of year. Once there, visit Bight's historic buildings, galleries and museums, hike or mountain bike along the Ovens River in town or the nearby Murray River. Experience the towns charm by relaxing by the fireplace in your own rustic cabin or holiday home. Because Bright sits at the foothills of the Victorian Alps, its holiday accommodation also services the ski areas of Mt Hot ham, Mount Buffalo and Falls Creek. Nearby destinations include Mt Buffalo National Park, Lake Buffalo, national trust village, Wandiligong and local wineries.

History of Bright

Originally named Morse's Creek, Bright was renamed in 1861 in honour of British politician John Bright. This followed an ugly chapter for the town that followed the discovery of gold in the nearby Buckland River. The ensuing influx of 3,000 prospectors in the following six months resulted in an outbreak of disease that killed one-third of them and the abandoned claims attracted Chinese prospectors. They in turn angered local residents who, in 1857, ran them out of town at gunpoint and in the process killed many of them. The town's main industry is now tourism with the focus on the Bright Autumn Festival celebrating the avenues of trees planted by its pioneers.
