History of Caulfield South
The origins of the name Caulfield are indefinite, but one theory is that the area was named after the builder John Caulfield, who arrived in the region in 1837. The area began to develop rapidly in the 1870s when new lines of transport were built to connect the area to other parts of Melbourne. The city developments were planned around the racecourse where the first Caulfield Cup was run in 1879. Today Caulfield South is a highly popular residential area just 10km from the CBD.
Landmark in Caulfield South
The Caulfield General Medical Centre began as a local mansion name the Glen Eira. In 1915 it was converted into an Army General Hospital and served as a rehabilitation centre for soldiers who had returned from the Great War. Today is remains a medical centre, mainly catering for rehabilitation and geriatric patients.
