Things to do in Cowes
Being the main town and accommodation area on Phillip Island, Cowes is a great spot to stay to watch the fairy penguin parade, hit a family friendly beach, throw a line in off the jetty or take a wildlife tour on this island sanctuary.
History of Cowes
Originally named Mussel Rocks, Cowes was renamed after the UK town on the Isle of Wight. Early on in its history, visitors arrived by steamboat. And before the bridge between San Remo and Newhaven was built, Cowes was the point of arrival from the mainland.
Landmark in Cowes
Summerland Beach is the place to view the penguin parade at sunset while Seal Rocks has colonies of fur seals between October and April. To see koalas, wombats, kangaroos and native birds visit Phillip Island Wildlife Park, the Koala Conservation Centre, the Rhyll Swamp bird sanctuary and Wildlife Wonderland near San Remo. There is also the Phillip Island Heritage Centre and Museum for the history of wildlife on the Island. For motor sports enthusiasts, the Island has a Grand Prix Circuit and Visitors Centre.

Cowes has a strong cultural and artistic streak and its shopping reflects this. The town has lots of galleries, crafts and souvenir shops and every Sunday, handmade arts and crafts are on sale at its markets.

The island also has an important motor-racing track which is the traditional home of the Australian motor-cycle Grand Prix in October, the World Superbike Championships in April and the V8 Supercar Championships in November.
