History of Dandenong
The original inhabitants of the greater Dandenong area were the Wurundjeri and Boonerwrung (or Bunurong) tribes. The name Dandenong is thought to have indigenous origins, coming from a word meaning lofty mountains. With its high density of eucalypts and red gums, Dandenong attracted many settlers and today retains a cosy rural atmosphere despite significant industrial and commercial developments. It was once an independent township but eventually became part of the greater Melbourne area through the process of urban sprawl.

The Dandenong Town Hall is the architectural and social heart of the city. The building has been restored with modern elegance, yet much remains of the original charm of its 1890 construction.
