Things to do in Docklands

There are a varied number of activities in Docklands. Enjoy a picnic with family and friends at Docklands Park. The Park is abundant in native plants making it a perfect backdrop for a picnic. Take a Sailing tour around the area. There are tours available in Docklands, where a Certified Skipper will accompany you and provide an insight into sailing. After, enjoy a drink or meal along the Docks at one of the many splendid cafs and restaurants. Docklands host a number of festivities and events throughout the year including the Summer Boat Show and the Melbourne Dragonboat Festival, which is held in January March. Dress up in your best frock and take part in the Spring Racing Festivities at Docklands restaurants. If you are in Docklands during Christmas, do not miss the Christmas Waterfront Entertainment, which includes a number of spectacular performances from a range of artists.

History of Docklands

Melbourne Docklands was originally inhabited by the Kulin Nation clan, which included the Wurundjeri and Bunerong people of the Indigenous population. The rivers that line Docklands were used as a source of water and food. During the 1980s, Victoria Dock was established in Docklands, next to the railways and thus became an industrial and transport hub of Victoria.

Landmark in Docklands

There are a number of famous landmarks in Docklands, some of which include Victoria Harbour, Southern Cross Station and Docklands Park. Docklands Park displays the popular post-modern art piece The Blowhole by Duncan Stemler and a number of other public architectural artworks. The Grand Hotel in Docklands is a historic landmark that is protected by the Heritage Council of Victoria. It has recently been fully restored to its former grandeur, paying tribute to the Victorian gold rush. Docklands is home to the Telstra Dome (originally named Docklands Stadium and then Colonial Stadium). The Stadium was opened in March 2000 and is a 52,000 seat stadium which hosts AFL games, concerts and other popular sporting events. Another popular landmark is Batmans Hill, which is a precinct of Docklands that is used for a number of purposes including commercial and retail space, entertainment, residential sections, restaurants and cultural sites.

Shopping in Docklands

Melbourne has long been recognised as Australias shopping and fashion capital. If its fashion youre seeking then Melbourne has it covered. The citys funky laneways and tree-lined streets are a haven for small boutiques specialising in Australian designers, jewellery, accessories and international fashion. Those seeking out leading international fashion labels can stroll down Collins Street, home to Chanel, Hermes, Gucci, Bvlgari and Louis Vuitton, as well as Melbourne icons Miss Louise and Le Louvre. Nearby, Little Collins Street has a great selection of cutting-edge and sartorial menswear including Kenzo, Declic, Chiodo, Roy, Arthur Galan and D. Inc. All fashion tastes are catered for by flagship department stores, David Jones and Myer, both in Bourke Street Mall. For a wide range of designers and retailers under the one roof you cant go past retail centres such as GPO Melbourne, Melbourne Central, QV, Collinstwo3four, Australia on Collins and Collins Place. Got a hobby or special interest? Whatever your 'thing' you'll find it right in the heart of the city. The network of lanes and arcades are host to some of Melbournes most intriguing shops, which sell everything from coins to spells and antique books to model trains. The city is also a great place for buying fresh food. Queen Victoria Market is the largest open air market in the southern hemisphere and considered a mecca for foodies. For the gourmet traveller, David Jones Food Hall is a must while chocoholics will be torn between Haighs, Max Brenner, Koko Black and The Chocolate Box. Most stores are open seven days, and many stay open late on Friday. As a general rule, trading hours for the City shops are: Saturday to Wednesday: 10.00am - 5.00pm Thursday: 10.00am - 7.00pm Friday: 10.00am - 9.00pm

Transport in Docklands

The City Circle Tram passes through Docklands, every 10 minutes (see timetable for details) and is a free and convenient way to get around the Melbourne CBD including stops near; Federation Square, Crown Entertainment Complex, Museums, Galleries, MCG, Exhibition Centre, China Town and Bourke Street mall - it is the perfect mode of transport for tourists, shoppers, workers and families. The City Circle Tram travels around the city and links up with all other major Melbourne tram, train, bus and light rail services.

Transportation in Docklands

Docklands is an inner suburb of Melbourne city and is conveniently linked to the city by both public and private transport, bicycle and pedestrian connections. The area is frequently serviced by trains, trams and buses which link Docklands to outer Melbourne city suburbs.

By Road 15 mintues from the airport, 2 mintues to city and parking is available on the Corner of Harbour Esplanade and Docklands Drive. By Foot Pedestrian access from the CBD is a simple, via the La Trobe Street Bridge, Bourke Street Pedestrian Bridge, or the Webb Bridge to Southbank will take you there in around 5 minutes. By Train Southern Cross Station is located within Docklands, therefore the regional and interstate and train services are at NewQuays doorstep by simply walking west over the Bourke Street Pedestrian bridge.

Primary schools in nearby suburbs include Albert Park Primary School, Port Melbourne Primary School and Galilee Catholic Primary School. There are also a number of tertiary education colleges nearby including RMIT University, Melbourne University and Victoria University.
