History of Elwood
It is believed that Elwood was named after the Quaker historian and poet, Thomas Elwood whom Lieutenant Governor La Trobe had high regards for. Elwood was originally a swampland and over the years has developed into a largely residential area.
Landmark in Elwood
Local landmarks include Elwood beach, which is extremely popular for visitors and locals alike during the summer, Elsternwick Park and Elwood Canal. Elwood Canal was originally designed to be one of network of canals in the area, which were to form a Venice-like suburb. However, Elwood Canal was the only canal constructed in the suburb and has become a popular landmark of Elwood.
Shopping in Elwood
The main shopping areas in Elwood are the Glenhuntly Road and Ormond Road centers. You will find Elsternwick shopping centre along Glenhuntly Road boasting an excellent selection of trendy fashion and retail outlets. Elsternwick Shopping Centre can be accessed via tram or train.
