History of Fitzroy
Fitzroy was named after the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Charles Augustus FitzRoy and is Melbourne's oldest suburb.
Throughout its history, Fitzroy has been home to blue collar factory workers, post-war European immigrants and recently, an increasing number of creative and professional workers who have gentrified the suburb to the point where it is know known as one of Melbourne's artistic and creative centres.
