Visitors to Geelong can take in the festive seaside ambience of Corio Bay and the promenade at Eastern Beach, go surfing at Bells Beach, head for the race track, or drive on down the Great Ocean Road and see the 12 Apostles. A stroll through Geelong's Botanical Gardens up on the headland overlooking the bay in Eastern Park is also worthwhile and there are 30-odd historic buildings to explore. History of Geelong
Originally home to the indigenous Wathaurong people, the first European visitors anchored outside Port Phillip Heads and explored the area in 1802. An escaped convict, William lived among the Wathaurong people for 32 years and was eventually pardoned and become an interpreter to the natives. Squatters settled the area In March 1836 and wool was being shipped to England by 1841. In 1851, gold was discovered nearby in Ballarat and Geelong's population more than doubled in just two years. Industry arrived in Geelong in 1922 with a number of plants including car and fertilizer manufacturing were established and Geelong remains an industrial city today.

Corio Bay on which Geelong sits gives the city a festive seaside ambience. Botanical Gardens is on the headland overlooking the bay. Eastern Beach is a developed section of waterfront with a promenade, swimming pool and an enclosed carousel. The Ford Discover Centre is the Ford Motor Company museum. National Wool Museum comes complete with recreated workers cottages. There are historic buildings to visit like Customs House, Corio Villa and Merchiston Hall. There is also plenty of accommodation for those seeking a kick-off point to nearby attractions like the Great Ocean Road, the Grampians Ranges, the Shipwreck Coast and the Bellarine Peninsula.
