Things to do in Gippsland
There is an endless array of things to do in Gippsland. Soak up the surf and sand on Ninety Mile Beach or rent a boat at Lakes Entrance and explore the beauty of the Gippsland Lake system.
Follow the Gourmet Deli Trail and feast on local produce and wines or explore quaint villages in Central Gippsland including Glengarry, Toongabbie and Heyfield.
The Strzelecki Ranges and Mount Worth National Park offer fantastic hiking and sweeping views of the hinterland and coast. The National Parks and reserves in the northern areas of Gippsland such as the Mitchell River National Park and the Buchan Caves Reserve also provide spectacular high country scenery.
History of Gippsland
After being inhabited by the Gunai and Bunurong Aboriginal people for thousands of years, Gippsland was first settled by Europeans in the middle of the 1800's.
The area is named after the Governor of New South Wales, George Gipps who was friends with one of Gippsland's early explorers, Pawel Edmund Strzelecki.
Landmark in Gippsland
Gippsland's varied geography has a number of spectacular landmarks ranging from mountainous, high country ranges to lush, agricultural land and endless stretches of beaches and lakes.
The Gippsland Lakes comprising of Lake Victoria, Lake Wellington and Lake King are a paradise for visitors. The area teems with birdlife and the adjoining parks and reserves are perfect for bushwalking, boating and fishing.
Gippsland is also famous for it beaches, including the famous Ninety Mile Beach. The small holiday towns of Loch Sport, Paradise Beach and Seaspray are all hidden gems of the coast and are perfect for that that relaxing coastal getaway.
Shopping in Gippsland
The larger towns of the Gippsland region, such as Bairnsdale, Traralgon and Sale all contain shopping precincts with all the major services including supermarkets, banks and food outlets.
There are many art gallery trails throughout the region and a number of wineries. Gippsland is also famous for its local produce and fruit and vegetables, meats and dairy products that can be purchased straight from the farm gate.

Gippsland is a food lover's paradise with the main towns of Lakes Entrance, Bairnsdale, Traralgon, Inverloch and Wonthaggi all containing interesting local fare and many different dining options. Local seafood is abundant, as is fresh produce and meat from the lush farm land of the area.

Bushwalking is a popular activity in Gippsland with hundreds of trails and 12 National Parks to choose from, including the Lakes National Park, Morwell National Park and the Mitchell River National Park.
The high country of the Gippsland Region also offers many activities including skiing in the winter and white water rafting, abseiling and hiking all year round.
Transport in Gippsland
V Line train services connect Gippsland with Melbourne travelling through Moe, Traralgon, Sale and Bairnsdale. V Line coaches travel between Melbourne and the Wonthaggi and Inverloch areas and private coach services travelling between Melbourne and Sydney run along the Princes Highway. The nearest airport is Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport.
