Things to do in Goldfields & Grampians
The Goldfields and Grampians region offers a number of fantastic attractions, shopping and natural sights.
Ballarat's Sovereign Hill is great for exploring a real life gold rush town and there are many discoveries to be made in the nearby Gold Museum. The city is also home to a magnificent botanical gardens and bustling central business district with good shopping and charming, gold rush era architecture.
Bendigo is best known for its parks and reserves which are ideal for walking and cycling. The centre of the town also offers a varied mix of shopping and dining and also contains many examples of interesting heritage architecture.
The Ballarat Fine Art Gallery and the Bendigo Art Gallery are two of the finest regional galleries in the country with extensive collections.
Horsham and Halls Gap are known as the gateway to the Grampians and are a great base from which to explore the National Park. As well as the beautiful scenery, the Grampians is home to many exciting outdoor activities including rock climbing, canoeing, abseiling and mountain biking.
History of Goldfields & Grampians
The Victorian gold rush between 1851 and 1860 attracted prospectors from around Australia and all over the world who descended on the region in search of fortunes. Large discoveries of gold in Ballarat and Bendigo initiated the rush and the two towns quickly grew in size to meet the needs of those working the gold fields. Today, Ballarat and Bendigo remain the largest centres in the region.
The gold rush extended over a large geographical area and was responsible for the establishment of the towns of such as Stawell, Horsham and Castlemaine.
Landmark in Goldfields & Grampians
The Grampians National Park is a stunning mountain range containing spectacular cliff faces, rock formations, Aboriginal art sites and wildflower blooms. One of the most visited holiday destinations in Victoria, the park boasts abundant bird and wildlife and inspiring views from the many different lookouts.
Sovereign Hill, a living museum that shows Ballarat as it was during the gold rush, remains a popular attraction. Visitors to the park can pan for gold, travel into a mine or talk with a real life resident of the gold fields. The nearby Gold Museum contains exhibitions relating to the gold rush, as well as an extensive collection of gold nuggets and coins.
Shopping in Goldfields & Grampians
There are major shopping districts in Ballarat and Bendigo with supermarkets, department stores and many speciality shops. Horsham and Stawell all offer busy shopping precincts with excellent services.
There are many fantastic markets throughout the region featuring local produce, arts and crafts and old wares. The Showground Markets and the Bridge Street Markets are a highlight in Bendigo and the Ballarat Farmers Market is great for local produce.

The Goldfields and Grampians region offers an exciting and eclectic mix of dining choices. Ballarat and Bendigo are home to everything from fine dining restaurants to cafes and take away shops.
Horsham is an excellent dining destination with many of the restaurants and cafes of the town offering exciting fare using locally grown produce. The region is known for its beef, lamb and olive groves. Horsham and surrounds also offers a number of wineries.

There are many golf courses, tennis courts and sporting fields throughout the region. Ballarat is home to an indoor sporting stadium and two Olympic sized swimming pools.
Bendigo is fantastic for walking and cycling as the city is surrounded by National Parks and reserves including the Greater Bendigo National Park, One Tree Hill Regional Park and the Sandhurst and Mandurang State Forests.
Bushwalking in the Grampians National Park near Horsham is also a highlight with trails suitable for every level of hiker. Horsham also boasts one of the top rated public golf courses in Australia.
Transport in Goldfields & Grampians
Ballarat and Bendigo are serviced by daily V/Line train services from Melbourne. Ballarat is a one hour drive from Melbourne along the Western Highway and Bendigo is a two hour drive from Melbourne along the Calder Highway. Horsham is a three hour drive from Melbourne along the Henty, Glenelg or Western Highways. Daily V/Line Coach services travel from Melbourne to Horsham, Stawell and the towns surrounding the Grampians.
