Things to do in Mornington

In Mornington you can swim in its safe, secluded family friendly bay or surf beaches studded with brightly painted bathing boxes, take a scenic cliff-top walk, ride a horse through native bush lands, tour the vineyards or take a ride on the Mornington stream train. History of Mornington

Originally known as Schnapper Point, Mornington, the main settlement of Mornington Peninsula, was settled in the 1830s. Livestock followed and so did the first hotel in 1856. In the late 1800's when the railway was built, it began to attract tourists. Paddle steamer was once a common mode of transport around the resorts of the area.

One of the nearby beaches is an exposed fossil plain featuring fossils that are 25 million years old. The old post office has been turned into a museum and historic buildings include the Old Post Office, Court House, Grand Hotel, St Peters Church and Vicarage and the wooden home Southdean.

Galleries, antiques, boutiques and craft shops are Mornington's specialty. There are also street markets on Wednesday with locally grown produce and on the second Sunday of the month, the Mornington Racecourse Market.
