History of Melbourne-Inner

It was named after the British Prime Minister William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, but the first European settlers to Melbourne in 1803, (then home to the indigenous Kulin people) abandoned it before a year in favour of Tasmania. In 1835, settlers from Tasmania founded the first European settlement and by the 1850s, thanks to its proximity to many gold fields, it had become Australia's largest and richest settlement, and still boasts many grand Victorian-era buildings. Melbourne was the nation's capital before Canberra and until the seventies it remained Australia's financial and business centre. After booming in the 1980s Melbourne slumped economically in the early nineties, a trend that has slowly been reversed through privatization and a number of new developments. Melbourne remains an important manufacturing centre and arts hub.
