Port Fairy is brimming with things to do. Whether it is long walks by the sea, exploring stunning heritage buildings or attending world class music festivals, there is something for everyone.
Have a stroll around town to see some of the many heritage buildings including John Mills Cottage, the Moyne Mill, Mott's Cottage and St Patrick's Church all impressive buildings from the nineteenth century.
Port Fairy hosts a world famous folk music festival every March. With over 100 different musical performances ranging from roots, blues, folk and many other different musical styles, the festival draws large crowds to the seaside town.
Riding on the back of the fishing industry since its inception, Port Fairy is still a great place to throw a line in. Charter Boats can take you offshore or you can try the Moyne River. Killarney Beach is also a fishing hotspot and is one of the best swimming beaches in the area.
The Tower Hill State Game Reserve is fantastic for bushwalking and seeing some wildlife and stunning natural flora. There are a number of great bushwalks in the area, one of the most interesting being the Shipwreck Walk, an easy 2 kilometres stroll from the surf club to the Moyne River where you will encounter a number of ship wrecks sitting just off the coast.
Port Fairy is also within easy reach of the stunning beauty of the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and the Great Ocean Road.
History of Port Fairy
Port Fairy was settled by whalers and sealers in the early nineteenth century. Sydney solicitor James Atkinson bought the land in the town and sub-divided and constructed the harbour on the Moyne River. As agriculture grew in the surrounding districts, Port Fairy became an important port, bustling with the shipping trade that carried crops and seafood to Melbourne and other larger markets.
Port Fairy was named in 1887 changing from Belfast, the name James Atkinson had given it after his home town in Northern Ireland. Today the town relies on a combination of tourism and fishing as its major industries.

Port Fairy is located just to the west of the Great Ocean Road, one of the world's great drives. Stretching from Torquay to Warrnambool, the road passes the Twelve Apostles and the beautiful towns of Lorne, Port Campbell, Warrnambool and Port Fairy.
