Things to do in St Kilda
Take a dip at St Kilda beach, do some laps in the sea baths or walk the pier. Also worth a visit on the foreshore is the historic Luna Park fun park and popular concert venue, the Palais Theatre. For shopping and dining head to Fitzroy Street and Acland Street (the latter of which is also famous for its cake shops) and then walk it off in the suburb's lovely Botanic gardens.
History of St Kilda
Once a seaside resort, St Kilda has developed into a cosmopolitan inner suburb. It was named after a ship called The Lady of St Kilda (which was named after the Scottish Island St Kilda) which visited Melbourne soon after it was founded. The ship was owned by Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, a member of a prominent British Political family after whom Acland Street was named. St Kilda became a well-to-do area soon after it was founded but when into decline during the Depression in the 1890s. After World War I St Kilda gained a reputation as an area of prostitution and today the suburb attracts more tourists and fewer artists than in the past and is home to both disadvantaged and the well heeled.
Landmark in St Kilda
St Kilda's attractions include the calm, sandy St Kilda beach, St Kilda Pier and its Sea Baths. Also along the foreshore is the Palais theatre for entertainment and Luna Park, a historic seaside amusement park. The Esplanade Hotel, one of Melbourne's best-known pubs is the place for comedy and concerts. The suburb is home to a number of lovely gardens and reserves, including the 6.5-hectare Botanical Gardens which were established in 1860. There is also the Acland Street precinct known for its shopping, restaurants, cake shops and vibrant nightlife. In neighbouring Elsternwick is the historic mansion, Rippon Lea, a large Romanesque home with beautiful gardens. St Kilda is also home to a number of festivals including the St Kilda Festival in February, and St Kilda Film Festival in May. Nearby beachside suburbs include as Middle Park, Port Melbourne, Elwood and Brighton. St Kilda has many hostels, B&Bs and a number of hotels and corporate executive rentals are an economic alternative for business executives or travelers.
Shopping in St Kilda
There are shops in Fitzroy Street, Acland Street and in St Kilda Road south of the junction. The Esplanade and Acland Street on the weekend are also packed with arts and crafts stalls.

Sports & Fitness in St Kilda
In addition to the beach, and the parks and bike tracks that line it, the suburb is home to the St Kilda Aussie Rules football club and has many sports ovals in Albert Park including the historic Junction Oval and is home to the annual Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix. Albert Park Lake is also surrounded parkland and walking and bicycle tracks.
