Things to do in Torquay
Not surprisingly, Torquay is the place to surf as well as the place to buy surfing merchandise. You can also take a stunning oceanside drive, bushwalk through is coastal bushland or along its beaches and over cliff tops. Alternatively, you may prefer to throw in a line at Zeally Bay, picnic on its foreshore parklands or relax in your own rented beach house.
History of Torquay
Following the establishment of Melbourne and Geelong, the European settlers arrived in Torquay. Accompanying them were diseases which wiped out the areas indigenous inhabitants. Sheep grazing was the first industry in the area and by the 1860s picnicking was popular and Torquay soon became a popular holiday spot for people from Geelong and Melbourne. The development of properties, roads and bridges in the early 1900s further boosted the town's development. Torquay Surfcoast is now a key business, surfing centre and accommodation haven. Though it was originally named Spring Creek after the river on the town's southwestern border, it was renamed Torquay in 1890s after the Devonshire holiday resort in the UK.
Landmark in Torquay
The Great Ocean Road with its breathtaking views begins at Torquay. There are seven main beaches along the coast but it is Bells Beach that is most famous for surfing.
Torquay is bordered on the southwest by Spring Creek and on the northeast by Deep Creek. Local coastal landmarks include the rocky extremity, Point Danger and Zeally Bay, a good fishing and sailing spot. Some of the big surf companies started in Torquay, including Rip Curl, Piping Hot and Quiksilver. A surfing museum can be found at Surfworld in the Surf City Shopping Centre. The Surf Coast Walk runs for 27 km from Jan Juc to Angahook Lorne State Park near Aireys Inlet

Sports & Fitness in Torquay
Torquay revolves around surfing culturally and financially and is home to seven main beaches and host to many surf carnivals including the Rip Curl pro surfing classic at Bells Beach at Easter, the High Tide Festival in December and it also hosts the Australian Strongman Triathlon in early February. Accomodation is also found close to the beach where other popular sports include swimming, boating and fishing. Torquay also has golf, football, cricket, bowls and surf life saving clubs and horse riding, cycling and bush walks are also popular.
