History of Warrnambool
The city name is taken from the Aboriginal word Warrnambool which was used to refer to a nearby volcano cone. The word is thought to have several meanings including two swamps and ample water. During the Victorian Gold Rush, Warrnambool became a busy and important port. Warrnambool has developed from a municipality to a borough to a town and finally into a city in 1918.
