Things to do in Yarra Valley & Dandenongs
The Yarra Valley winemaking region just an hour's drive northeast of Melbourne boasts 50 plus wineries located amidst beautiful scenery.
In addition to a wine tour, you can spot a platypus at Healesville Sanctuary or take a trip on Yarra Valley Tourist Railway at Yarra Glen.
For some local history there is the Museum of Lilydale and the mid-19th century farm life Gulf Station.
And visitors can either take a day trip from Melbourne or stay in Healesville and Yarra Glen where most of the region's holiday accommodation is found.
History of Yarra Valley & Dandenongs
The Yarra Valley was settled in the 1850's by Swiss immigrants and quickly became established as a wine-growing region. The industry then fell into a slump in the early nineteen hundreds when demand for wine declined and the land was used for agriculture.
Then in the early seventies the industry was revived and is now famous for its great sparkling wines, Shiraz and Chardonnay.

Most of the region's wineries are found around Coldstream, Yarra Glen and Dixons Creek and prominent names include Coldstream Hills, De Bortoli and Domaine Chandon, which is owned by famous French Champaign maker, Moet and Chandon.
The Yarra Ranges National Park is close to the town of Healesville and another popular attraction is the Healesville Sanctuary wildlife park.
The area has its share of historic sites including the National Trust's Gulf Station, a Yarra Valley farm of the 1850s at Yarra Glen and the Museum of Lilydale which has exhibitions of local history and of opera diva Dame Nellie Melba who eventually settled in Lilydale.

Yarra Valley is a great place to shop especially when it comes to arts and crafts and local produce and the region has many local weekend markets selling anything from handmade items to cheese, fruit, handmade chocolate and meats.
One of these is the Yarra Glen craft market which is held on the first Sunday of each month.
