History of Cottesloe
The Dutch were the first Europeans to visit the area in the late 1600s and the area was settled in the late 1800s. Western Australia's governor, Sir Frederick Napier Broome named Cottesloe in honour of Captain CH Freemantle whose brother was Baron Cottesloe. In the early 1900s it became a municipality and the town grew and attracted visitors to its beach and during World War II it became a key location in the war effort. In the 1960's the area's affluence grew as roads were developed.

Cottesloe Beach is a popular Perth swimming and surfing spot. Peppermint Grove on Cottesloe's eastern-border with its Federation-era estates is one of Perth's most sought after postcodes. Keanes Point on Freshwater Bay is home to the prestigious Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. The Cottesloe Reef is 1.5km offshore and extends intermittently around 4.5km along the coast. Cottesloe is famed for its rows of Norfolk Island pine trees, some of which are heritage listed.
The Sea View Golf Club in Broome Street provides a refuge for birds.
