Things to do in Margaret River & South Coast
The Margaret River region is internationally renowned for its wineries. There are 90 wineries in the region with chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon being the best known varieties of the region. Most have cellar doors where visitors can sample and purchase wine.
Visit some amazing beaches in the Margaret River region. From the safe and calm beaches of Geographe Bay at Busselton to the famed, wild surf breaks of Margaret River there is a beach for every sun lover.
There are some fantastic bushwalking trails, including the famous Cape to Cape walk stretching over 100 kilometres from Cape Leeuwin to Cape Naturaliste. The walk can be completed in stages and offers stunning views of the coastal landscape.
The Busselton Jetty and underwater observatory are also must visits. Marvel at the longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere and the 8 metre deep observatory at the end of the jetty.
History of Margaret River & South Coast
Previously inhabited by the Indigenous Noongar tribe, the Margaret River region was settled by Europeans in the 1830's.
The region and river of Margaret River is named after Margaret Wyche, the cousin of John Garrett Bussell who founded the town of Busselton.
The region was first settled as an agricultural and timber gathering area and its population grew steadily as workers arrived from Perth and the eastern states. Whaling and fishing provided employment along the coast and led to the settlement of Augusta, Busselton and Dunsborough.
Landmark in Margaret River & South Coast
Think of Margaret River and you immediately think of wine, and so the most famous landmark of the region is the seemingly endless landscape of vineyards which have made the area famous. The vineyards offer cellar doors open to the public and many now combine a vineyard with a fine dining restaurant.
The coast line is another famous landmark, luring sun seekers who will find a paradise of protected coves and bays and wild, rugged surf beaches. Known secretively among surfers for decades, this stretch of coast has beaches for everyone and is perfect for those wishing to find a stretch of sand all to themselves.
Shopping in Margaret River & South Coast
Busselton has both a Coles and Woolworths supermarket and nearby Dunsborough has a small shopping mall. The township of Margaret River contains supermarkets, banks and cafes and a small supermarket cab be found in Augusta. Bunbury is the administrative centre of the region and has a good selection of supermarkets, speciality stores and takeaway food shops.
There are a number of art galleries in the region, in addition to many local markets including the Town Square markets in Margaret River township. Despite being best known for its wineries, the Margaret River Region is increasingly becoming recognised for its local produce and gourmet foods. There are many small gourmet food outlets and farm gate produce is known for its freshness and quality.
Restaurants & Cafes in Margaret River & South Coast
Dining is a major drawcard of the region. There are top class restaurants that specialise in matching local ingredients with locally produced wines. Seafood is a common item on the menu. Busselton, Bunbury, Margaret River and Augusta all have a wide selection of eating options.
Sports & Fitness in Margaret River & South Coast
Swimming, surfing and diving are all popular activities along the coast. There are approximately 75 surfing spots in the region including the famous breaks of Smiths Beach, Jays Beach, Margarets and North Point. Swimmers flock to Geographe Bay and Hamelin Bay for calm and protected waters.
There are excellent bushwalks in the Boranup Karri Sate Forest and cycling around the vineyards is a great way to get around. There are also golf courses, tennis courts and gyms dotted throughout the region.
Transport in Margaret River & South Coast
The Margaret River region is about four hours drive south of Perth along either the Coast Road or the South Eastern Highway. Daily coach services connect the region with Perth and trains from Perth run to Bunbury. Busselton Regional Airport has flights to Perth.
